The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is calling for major investments in clean technologies and alternative fuels to drive the shipping industry toward net-zero emissions. Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that regulations alone are not enough, what’s needed is a full transformation of the sector, including large-scale production of alternative fuels and modernization of port infrastructure and refueling operations. This shift will require collaboration across the entire maritime ecosystem.
Progress is already underway: over 200 vessels are operating on zero or near-zero emission fuels, and 80% of new orders for container and vehicle carriers include hybrid capabilities. The IMO’s new “Net-Zero Framework” introduces a global greenhouse gas intensity standard for marine fuels and a pricing mechanism for emissions, aiming to reward early adopters and accelerate the transition to sustainable shipping.
