Industry calls on EU to bolster clean shipping standards

An alliance of non-profits and industry coalitions, collectively representing 82 clean maritime and green hydrogen industry stakeholders, has urged the European Union (EU) to adopt stronger policies to support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry. While recent IMO measures were seen as a historic step, the coalition argues they fall short of aligning with the Paris Agreement and fail to penalize 90% of emissions, limiting the shift away from fossil fuels.

The alliance calls on the EU to fill regulatory gaps and lead with a policy roadmap that includes financial support for e-fuels, expansion of the EU ETS, and stricter, binding targets under FuelEU Maritime. These proposals aim to unlock Europe’s competitive edge in clean maritime technologies and align with the goals of the Clean Industrial Deal, making this a clear example of policy-driven best practices in maritime decarbonisation.
