The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has published a study examining blends of biodiesel and conventional marine fuels as potential marine pollutants. The report focuses on alternative fuels based on FAME, HVO and Fischer-Tropsch technologies, which are increasingly being adopted as near-term solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport while remaining compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.
The study addresses an important knowledge gap regarding the environmental behaviour of these fuels in the event of accidental releases and assesses the suitability of current spill response techniques. Its findings aim to strengthen contingency planning, preparedness and response capabilities as the maritime sector accelerates the transition towards cleaner and lower-carbon fuels.
